The Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics at Ulm University Hospital investigates musculoskeletal disorders and develops and tests new therapeutic methods. The overall goal of the research work is to understand the causes of diseases and improve the therapy of injured and diseased patients. The broad research spectrum includes bone biology, bone regeneration, research into the causes of healing disorders following bone fractures, the biology of cartilage and intervertebral discs as well as spine and joint biomechanics. An interdisciplinary and international research team consisting of biologists, molecular biologists, physicians, engineers and computer scientists and a close cooperation of basic scientists and clinicians enables comprehensive research "from bench to bedside". Übergeordnetes Ziel der Forschungsarbeit ist es die Ursachen von Erkrankungen zu verstehen und die Therapie verletzter und erkrankter Patienten zu verbessern. Das breite Forschungsspektrum umfasst Knochenbiologie, Knochenregeneration, Erforschung der Ursachen von Heilungsstörungen nach Knochenbrüchen, Biologie von Knorpel und Bandscheibe, Biomechanik von Wirbelsäule und Gelenken. Ein interdisziplinäres und internationales Forschungsteam aus Biologen, Molekularbiologen, Medizinern, Ingenieuren und Informatikern und eine enge Zusammenarbeit von Grundlagenwissenschaftlern und Klinikern ermöglicht eine umfassende Forschung "from bench to bedside“.
