A New Device for Heart Failure Recovery
Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico (IRCCS) Multimedica
Advanced Heart Failure treatments like cardiac resynchronization devices and new drugs have generated new hope in treating the growing burden of heart failure around the world. However, both are limited in their efficacy, with neither approach providing a permanent solution. To confront this situation a new study at Milan’s IRCCS Multimedica is looking at BAROREFLEX activation therapy (BAT), provided by the Barostim neo system (CVRx, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota). Via electrical stimulation of carotid baroreceptor BAT enables the restoration of the dumped baroreflex in HF subjects. It is able to restrain the excessive sympathetic drive and to turn up the vagal response, reinstating the appropriate balance of the autonomic nervous system. Patients recruited to this study have have had excellent results, with research offering new hope for those suffering from HF.
