The UK has fast become the destination of choice for research, development, and demonstration of connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies, with the formation of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) the UK CAV programme operates in a more collaborative and transparent fashion than almost any other country, bringing together government, industry and academia here and internationally, with a focus on three main strengths: Regulation and Insurance The UK has one of the most welcome regulatory frameworks in the world – you can test driverless cars anywhere in the UK today. The UK is one of the first countries to change their national legal framework to get ready for automated vehicles. R&D The UK’s world class research base and leadership in key driverless car capabilities. There is now an impressive range of collaborative research and development projects across the UK, underpinned by the £100 million Intelligent Mobility Fund. Testing/demonstration The UK has a globally significant cluster of physical testing facilities and demonstration sites for driverless car technologies. In 2017 the UK is starting a £200 million programme of government and industry funding to strengthen and integrate this cluster into a world-leading and open testing ecosystem.
