John George Psychiatric Hospital, a member of Alameda Health System is a public facility for involuntarily detained patients but they have shed negative connotations by pioneering guidelines on NOT using restraints. The hospital focuses on creating an environment of healing rather than restriction.
This includes expanding visiting hours to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week; use of a sensory garden and labyrinth; open and available snacks, access to linens, email, and private use of wireless phones; assisting families’ onsite; bringing in prior patients to share stories of recovery and to give hope to current patients. Only one in a thousand patients are placed in restraints and John George Psychiatric Hospital Patient satisfaction ranks in the top ten per cent of all Psychiatric hospitals.
