Kansai Photon Science Institute (KPSI) is a wide-ranging photon science facility at the forefront of
high intensity laser physics. With some of the world’s top class
high intensity lasers, KPSI is equipped to approach a broad range of fields ranging from fundamental physics, applied physics, biology, and applications research all the way to venture business. KPSI’s
center-piece is the J-KAREN-P Laser, a
short-burst
high intensity laser with an ultra-high power of 1000 trillion watts, generated by confining a laser energy of 30 J within the time of 30 femtoseconds, allowing researchers to work on projects at the very forefront of photon science. J-KAREN-P is opening up possibilities in materials and life sciences, with researchers looking at the development of a new type of compact Hadron therapy system, for treating cancer, providing a laser to accelerate ions over very short distances and an accelerator to accelerate them to appropriate energies to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy ones.
