Since its creation, the National Science Foundation has been tasked with improving the quality of life through science and technology. Keeping with this original objective, the NSF’s latest venture is taking a new and much needed approach towards accomplishing this. Every year, thousands of veterans return home from different branches of the armed forces with no job, little formal education, and seeking direction for a path for the future. Through grants, pilot programs, and supplement programs, the NSF has been able to get these veterans involved in engineering research across the country; both tackling traditional engineering challenges, as well as challenges that can directly benefit themselves or others in military service.
