How can mathematicians contribute to planetary challenges?
ICM 2018
A discussion panel at the 2018 International Mathematical Congress poses the question, and we caught up with several of the panellists to find out their perspective. Panellists include moderator Hans Engler (Professor, Georgetown University), Amit Apte (Faculty, International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bengaluru) who works in data assimilation models for climate science, Edward Lungu (Professor, University of Botswana) who works with the Botswanan government in a multitude of applications including epidemiology and climate change, and Claudia Sagastizábal (an independent researcher based at IMPA) who’s looking at energy optimisation with a view to optimal use of renewable energy.
