Clemson University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Distinguished History, Exceptional Future
Advanced materials is one of the primary emphasis areas of Clemson University which was established in 1889 to develop "the material resources of the State" for the people of South Carolina and the nation. Our department, consisting of 20 tenure track faculty members including six endowed chairs represents approximately 8% of the university research expenditures and serves as the hub of advanced materials activities. We have recently developed a new curriculum which allows for specialization in emphasis areas defined by faculty research expertise with topics such as energy materials, electronic and photonic materials and soft matter. The defining feature of our department is our ability to span the range from basic science to applied research and devices as demonstrated in the following case studies in optical fibers, energy materials and soft material engineering The department is heavily involved in University and State initiatives in advanced manufacturing and plays a major role in a $20M NSF Center "Made in SC" MADE in SC which aims to discover and establish new and sustainable approaches for the design and assembly of advanced materials that serve South Carolina’s STEM research, education and workforce needs, and to invigorate economic development. We are proud of our distinguished history and focused on our exceptional future.
